SIBELIUS:  Symphony No. 5, Op. 82 in E-flat Major

WYNTON MARSALIS: Violin Concerto in D Major

The Cleveland Orchestra’s Vinay Parameswaran joins the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra for an afternoon of Geneva debuts! Jazz legend Wynton Marsalis’ violin concerto makes its way to the stage of Smith for the first time. Performed by violinist Tai Murray, the piece combines the elements of jazz, blues, and classical music to create something that is uniquely American.

First premiered in 1915, Jean Sibelius’ Fifth Symphony demonstrates the composer’s commitment to lush, romantic harmony during a period of radical changes in the harmonic language of younger composers. The symphony underwent extensive revisions by the self-critical composer before it became the beloved masterpiece that is performed today.

Internationally recognized for his energetic presence, imaginative programming, and compelling musicianship, Vinay Parameswaran is one of the most exciting and versatile young conductors on the podium today. Appreciated for her elegance and effortless ability, Tai Murray creates a special bond with listeners through her mature phrasing and subtle sweetness.  Murray joined the faculty of the Yale School of Music in 2021. She plays a violin by Tomaso Balestrieri fecit Mantua ca. 1765, on generous loan from a private collection.
