God’s Country: Historic Churches and Chapels of the Genesee Valley
History: God’s Country: Historic Churches and Chapels of the Genesee Valley
Explore the churches of the Genesee Valley with photographer Phyllis Kitt. Author of the recent publication God’s Country: Historic Churches and Chapels of the Genesee Valley, Kitt will share the story of how a few wrong turns on a back country road ultimately led her to produce this beautifully-photographed work featuring more than 100 churches throughout the nine-county area surrounding Rochester. Kitt’s book documents the architectural and historical background of a diverse selection of buildings, including Geneva’s Trinity Episcopal Church, St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, the Presbyterian Church and the Baptist Church. Phyllis Kitt studied photography at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, New York. When she is not taking pictures, she is advocating for libraries and tutoring in literacy. But she is usually taking pictures. Ms. Kitt will sign copies of In God’s Country following the program and the book will be available for purchase. This program is supported in part by the Samuel B. Williams Fund for Programs in the Humanities. The Geneva Historical Society is located in the Prouty-Chew House at 543 South Main Street, Geneva, NY. Parking is on South Main Street or in the Trinity Episcopal Church lot across the street. For more information about this program, call the Geneva Historical Society office at 315-789-5151.
