A Word of Caution About Buying Tickets on the Secondary Ticket Market

In the haste of hoping they will score tickets to coveted concerts that could potentially sell out, many people resort to online ticket resellers rather than purchasing tickets from the official ticketing agency for a theater. These reseller sites are often the first to pop up on Google, Yahoo, and Bing searches.

Resellers can legally operate in New York if they are licensed. Many are not. Regardless of legal status, the risks of buying on the secondary ticket market include delayed delivery of tickets, obscene markups, and equally ridiculous hidden fees. Unfortunately, theater box offices like ours have no control over these sites and can provide no recourse to consumers once purchases have been made through them.

But we can offer you these tips to make sure you are buying Smith-sanctioned tickets from our official ticketing partner, Eventbrite.

1. The safest route for online tickets is to start at thesmith.org. When you click the “Buy Tickets” button on our website, it takes you to the official Ticketfly purchase link where you can purchase tickets.

2. Click on links from trusted sources. Our email newsletter is one such source, as is our Facebook page facebook.com/smithoperahouse and our Twitter feed, @SmithOperaHouse.

3. Still feel unsure? Call our Box Office at 315-781-5483 or stop in at 82 Seneca Street from 10 am to 4 pm Tuesday through Friday and our box office associates will happily help you. You can also email us at boxoffice@thesmith.org with questions.
