NEW MASK/VAX POLICY! All patrons over 12 years of age at films or live performances at The Smith scheduled through Dec. 31, 2021 are required to wear a mask AND show proof of vaccination status or proof of a negative COVID test (within 72 hours)*. Children 12 years old or younger are required to wear a mask. Depending on the nature of the show, patrons may be allowed to remove their mask once seated in the theatre. Policies are subject to change at any time without notice; however, we will make every effort to contact ticketholders to alert them of changes to this policy. *We strongly recommend the use of the New York State Excelsior Pass Wallet app available from your app store. This app shows vaccine data and test results and will make admission to The Smith go smoothly.

October 2020 Update

Our October 2020 Update was posted prior to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s movie theater reopening announcement on 10/17/2020.

It has been a rough several months, hasn’t it? We at The Smith are hanging in there and trying to stay optimistic and creative.

October Updates

It is unlikely we’re going to see any big concerts at The Smith before the end of 2020. There are a lot of reasons for this that are out of our control. We hope to have audiences for films soon and that we’ll eventually be allowed to have smaller concerts at reduced capacity. We follow the guidance of our local authorities and public health officials.

Please note that The Smith is a great place to host a physically-distanced meeting or party. At this point, we can accommodate up to 50 people, including Smith staff. We’ve hosted live, in-person tours, book club meetings and a senior photo shoot recently. If you need a big, indoor, COVID-compliant space, we’ve got it!

The Smith is a very grateful recipient of both the PPP and EIDL SBA loans. These funds are a real lifeline as our opportunities to generate revenue are extremely limited while almost no one is in the building. We have ramped up our grant-seeking efforts and last week learned that we received $1000 from the Walmart community grant fund. We have launched our annual membership drive and hope the community gives generously despite the fact we can’t offer them live events in return!

We have some good news!

  • We have developed several digital series and are just launching The Smith Speaker Series, a series of lectures recorded on the Smith stage. We’ll be hearing from scientists, winemakers, professors, and authors, all experts in their fields and all located in the Finger Lakes. We have an extraordinary community and this series will highlight that.
  • Also next month, The Smith will be launching a Patreon account. Patreon is a subscription platform where you pay a nominal monthly fee ($6-8) to receive Smith digital content.

  • The weekly Smith Film Club, now in its sixth month (!), is going strong! Each week we watch a film together (from the comfort of our own homes) and discuss it afterwards. Often subject matter experts to join us and lead the discussion. It’s been enlightening and fun.

  • Finally, The Smith’s long-running ArtSmart Educational Theater has gone 100% virtual for the 2020-2021 school year. We salute the educators who have taken on the task of teaching under these very challenging conditions. They have shown again and again that they truly love our kids.

We have had plenty of time to consider what value the Smith can continue to have for the community while we are physically closed. We are all so grateful for what terrific friends and supporters we have and only wish we could see you walk through our doors.

Please stay well.
