The Smith Center for the Arts is in search of a box office associate and volunteer coordinator. The ideal candidates would be enthusiastic team members who have a passion for presenting film and live performing arts as well as knowledge of audience services.

About The Smith

The Smith Opera House, circa 1894, is a 1,400-seat presenting house, bringing films and performing arts events in a wide variety of genres to diverse audiences.  Geneva, home of Hobart and William Smith Colleges, is a fastgrowing “jewel” of the Finger Lakes, located at the Northern end of Seneca Lake. 

Scope of work:

Box Office Associate:

  • Provides ticketing services for Smith presented events and venue rentals in person and via phone
  • Meet and greet the public 
  • Answers a variety of phone calls and voice messages, as well as manages box office email
  • Assists Box Office Manager and Executive Director with tasks
  • Troubleshoot with house management staff as needed
  • Prepares the building for events including hanging posters and ordering supplies
  • Process daily mail 
  • Process bank deposits
  • Receive deliveries to The Smith
  • Stays up to date with what’s happening in the building
  • After shows, updates various reports
  • Keeps various community calendars up to date with Smith events
  • Performs office tasks as needed such as filing and updating databases

Volunteer Coordinator:

  • Maintain relationships with the dozens of volunteers who support the work of The Smith
  • Recruit and bring aboard new volunteers
  • Design, schedule and deliver trainings with new and existing volunteers
  • Communicate regularly with volunteers to update them about volunteering opportunities and schedule them
  • Track volunteer hours, trainings, eligibility, and new sign-ups
  • Work with the house manager to make sure events are adequately staffed
  • Post new opportunities on our online volunteer platform, SignUpGenius

  • Has familiarity or willingness to learn Google programs such as Gmail, Google Drive, Google Docs, etc.

Desired Competencies

  • Experience using a Box Office system
  • Appreciation of the performing arts
  • Experience working in a fast-paced work environment

Education/Experience

  • HS Diploma
  • Retail experience a plus

Salary/Benefits

  • Hourly wage $15 per hour
  • Box Office Associate: Because of COVID, the ticket office is closed, but daily office and events assistance is still needed. Ideally, the box office associate would work 25-30 hours per week, 10am-4pm Monday-Friday as well as occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Volunteer Coordinator: Flexible part time hours, often with evenings and weekends.
  • Both positions are located at the theatre on Seneca Street in downtown Geneva.
