Smith Opera House

Presented by Geneva Tango.

The traditions of the great tango masters are constantly renewed by the creativity and artistry of tango orchestras all over the world, including Buffalo Tango Orkestra. In this concert, the three styles of Argentine tango dance will be beautifully interpreted by world-class musicians.  In addition to Argentine tango, the group consists of experts in classical, Gypsy, klezmer and jazz music. Hear tango gems such as La Cumparsita, Piazzolla, and music of known tango composers such as Julian Plaza and Mariano Mores, as well as BTO’s original arrangements of known and lesser known tunes but inspired by style of tango and milonga.

Milonga is a tango social dance and a style of dance. The African word means,  “ ‘argument’ or ‘issue’ in Kimbindu and ‘lines of dancers” in Ki-Kingo,” (Robert Faris Thompso. Tango. The Art of love. 2005.) To this day milonga is probably the style of tango the closest to tango’s African roots because of the rhythm based on candombe dancing. At the origins of tango, in the late 1800s European working class immigrants merged their dance with Afro-Cuban habanera and created tango-habanera. Now there are three styles of Argentine tango dance: tango, vals and milonga. All three distinctive music styles will be illustrated in the concert. The great tango music masters are Carlos di Sarli, Juan d’Arienzo, Anibal ‘Pichuro’ Troilo, Horacio Salgán, Oswaldo Pugliese (40s) , Piazzolla (80s).

The orquestra tipica emerged in 1912-13, brought by Vicente Greco, bandoneonista who had been trained  by the black master Meijas (some of Argentine tango are African.) The ensemble comprised of a bandoneon, piano, violin and contrabass. The orquesta típica is associated with tango music and usually is comprised of a string section (three or four violins, and sometimes viola and cello), three or more bandoneons, a rhythm section and double bass. An orquesta típica is an expanded version of a sexteto típico, which includes 2 bandoneons, 2 violins, double bass and piano.

Celebrate Geneva’s Hispanic Heritage! Buffalo Tango Orkestra’s performance at The Smith is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts and administered locally by Finger Lakes Community Arts Grants (FLCAG) at Auburn Public Theater.
