Watch Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers glide across the largest screen in the Finger Lakes! Experience the humor, romance, and joy of their 1936 hit musical, “Follow the Fleet,” which also stars Randolph Scott and Harriet Hilliard (better known as Harriet Nelson, of Ozzie and Harriet), and features appearances of a young Betty Grable and Lucille Ball.

“Follow the Fleet” is an especially fitting film to celebrate The Smith’s 125th birthday. Throughout the 1930s the cinema was a staple of daily life, offering a temporary escape from the challenges of the Great Depression. Musicals were at the height of their popularity and the dynamic team of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers came to define an entire era of Hollywood entertainment. The Smith, which had been renovated as a movie palace in 1931, was a center of community life throughout the decade, screening films such as “Follow the Fleet” to packed houses. In the 1940s, The Smith would become a gathering point for military men and women who were stationed at the Naval Training Station on Seneca Lake and looking to catch a film while off duty.

When it was first released, “Follow the Fleet” was praised by Variety magazine as part of the “big-time entertainment class,” undoubtedly due to the Irving Berlin score, the formidable art deco set design, and the luminous final dance number “Let’s Face the Music and Dance” — which critics agree is a standout routine of the entire Astaire-Rogers catalog.

Come celebrate the history of The Smith and the history of cinema with this delightful musical comedy.
