Thursday, June 6 at 7:00 PM
Smith Opera House

Paris is Burning (1990) depicts the New York City drag ball scene.  Shot in the late 1980s by Jennie Livingston, this gritty documentary examines how a community of Black and Latino gay and transgender performers build sustenance, creativity, and family. Exploring ballroom culture – and defining and re-defining words like “house,” “mother,” “shade” “voguing” and “Realness” – Paris is Burning draws a series of incisive character portraits. The movie writes a complex essay on class, race, identity, and the transformative powers of dance and performance.

It is part of The Smith’s FLX Pride Weekend celebration.

Grant support is provided by Rochester Area Community Foundation.

Bank of the Finger Lakes is The Smith’s film sponsor.
