Spirited Away is a 2001 film written and directed by famed animator Hayao Miyazaki.

It’s about a sullen 10-year-old girl who, during her family’s move to the suburbs, wanders into a world ruled by gods, witches, and spirits, and where humans are changed into beasts.

The film received many awards, including the second Oscar ever awarded for Best Animated Feature, the first anime film to win an Academy Award, and the only winner of that award to win among five nominees. The film also won the Golden Bear at the 2002 Berlin International Film Festival (tied with Bloody Sunday).

This is the fourth film of The Smith Center for the Arts’ Japanese Anime series.
