Smith Opera House Celebrates Major Milestones at Annual ‘State of the Smith’ Event

GENEVA, NY – The Smith Center for the Arts thanked its community, supporters, and board members for a remarkable 2024, highlighted at the recent “State of the Smith” event on November 19, 2025. The event honored Beginnings Credit Union for their sponsorship of the inaugural Smith Family Performance series, which begins on December 12 with a live theatrical production of Charles Dickens’, A Christmas Carol.

“Beginnings Credit Union is proud to support The Smith Opera House, a cornerstone of arts and culture in our community,” said Katie Foley, Vice President of Marketing & Sales at Beginnings. “We believe in investing in experiences that bring people together, inspire creativity, and strengthen the vibrant spirit of the communities we serve. Partnering with The Smith reflects our commitment to enriching lives beyond just banking.”

Executive Director Susie Monagan and Board Co-Chair Kelby Russell presented the draft 2024 Annual Report, showcasing a year filled with significant accomplishment and growth. In her remarks, Monagan highlighted the Smith’s achievement in surpassing $1 million in revenue, the first time in the organization’s history. The $1,212,975 result represents a 50% increase over 2024 revenues. There was a 40% increase in “earned” income from 2023 to 2024, representing ticket and concessions sales.

Graph A (Revenue) represents the proportion of earned and donated income. The donated proportion grew slightly from 41% in 2023. Graph B (Expenses) represents the portion of expenses going to “programs and operations” versus “management and general.” The Smith was able to shave 5% off management and general costs, assuring the public that the finances of the organization are going to fulfill its primary mission of engaging the Finger Lakes community by hosting performances, events, and celebrations while preserving the 131-year-old, historic Smith Opera House.

The State of the Smith was preceded by the Smith Board’s Annual Meeting. The following Board members were elected as officers: Rebecca Burditt (Co-Chair), Kelby Russell (Co-Chair), Shanelle France (Vice-Chair), Sarah Tuttle (Secretary) and Paul Perrotto (Treasurer). Hank Pierson and Joe McHale have recently joined the Smith’s Board of Directors.

As the community heads into the holiday season, The Smith asks all to consider a donation, a membership, a gift card, or a gift of concert tickets. The organization looks forward to another year of celebrating the arts, fostering cultural connections, and serving as a cornerstone for creativity in the region.
