Smith Opera House Completes Balcony Safety Upgrade with Support from Wyckoff Family and More

GENEVA, NY – The Smith is proud to announce that, with the support of the New York State Council on the Arts and The Wyckoff Family Foundation, a safety railing and hand posts have now been installed in the theater’s balcony seating area.

To fulfill The Smith’s mission of engaging all members of the Finger Lakes community, it is essential that the 131 year-old building is updated regularly to ensure safety and create a truly welcoming environment. The balcony project is the latest in The Smith’s ongoing series of accessibility improvements. Prior to this installation, the theater’s balcony lacked  handrails and had a low front edge, creating safety concerns. These conditions limited The Smith’s confidence in ensuring a safe experience for all patrons, especially young children and those with mobility challenges.

“Many patrons know that the Smith’s balcony is a very special place to enjoy performances. You are “among the stars” and surrounded by gorgeous art deco styling. We are so grateful to The Wyckoff Family Foundation, Russell Fabrications, and NYSCA for supporting this project and making sure the balcony is safe as well as beautiful,” says Smith Executive Director, Susie Monagan.
