Center Stage Act II Capital Campaign

We did it!

Thanks to our generous friends and neighbors, the Smith Center for the Arts has successfully completed the “Center Stage Act II” Capital Campaign, injecting over $1.7 million dollars worth of capital improvements into our beloved Smith Opera House.

The campaign was seeded in 2014 by a $750,000 grant from New York State. In the two years that followed, almost $500,000 was raised by 125 businesses, foundations, and individuals. Late in 2016, the Smith procured $536,000 from New York State’s Main Street Anchor and Empire State Development Programs, lifting the Campaign well over the finish line.

We hope you have had a chance to visit the building, enjoy a show, and appreciate some of the improvements the community’s generosity has allowed. They have allowed The Smith to expand programming, attracting an ever-growing patron base and contributing significantly to Geneva’s “Downtown Renaissance.”  Improvements include:

  • Installation of air conditioning.
  • Acquisition of the latest digital film projection equipment.
  • Upgrades to the sound system.
  • Installation of a new movie screen, the largest in the Finger Lakes region.
  • Construction of a new loading dock and storage area.
  • Restoration of the Seneca Street Kiosk.

The Smith has even more changes in store. At the end of June 2018, thanks to the Downtown Revitalization Initiative and DASNY grants, the opera house will undergo major renovations to its artists’ dressing rooms and basement bar, restroom, and cabaret area. Once these changes are completed in 2019, we anticipate a much-improved experience for patrons and visiting artists alike.

We hope you are as excited as we are about this new era for our “cultural anchor.” As always, we invite you to come see shows, stay involved, and tell us how we can do better.
