House Manager/Volunteer Coordinator

The Smith Center for the Arts is in search of an outgoing, enthusiastic team member who has passion for presenting film and live performing arts as well as experience in providing audience services.

The Smith Opera House, circa 1894, is a 1,319-seat presenting house, bringing films and performing arts events in a wide variety of genres to diverse audiences. Geneva, home of Hobart and William Smith Colleges, is a fast-growing “jewel” of the Finger Lakes, located at the Northern end of Seneca Lake.

Duties include:

House Management

  • Oversee Associate House Manager
  • oversee paid venue staff providing custodial services
  • run front of house for every Smith presented event and venue rental
  • work with volunteer ushers to provide for the safety and comfort of audience

    members

  • liaise with Security companies, liquor board, emergency services personnel, law

    enforcement, and other external companies as events may require

  • track, stock and report concessions sales.
  • Prep concessions points of sale and reconcile transactions at close of day.
  • prepare theater signage as needed for each event
  • troubleshoot with box office staff as needed
  • liaise with artist teams to provide merchandise sales support and reconciliation
  • Oversee the maintenance of all hardware and software essential to the above listed

    tasks

    Volunteer Coordination

    • Recruit new volunteers
    • Train volunteers
    • Schedule volunteers
    • Oversee volunteer performance during events and provide guidance and feedback

    Essential Competencies

    • 1-3 years experience providing Audience Services
    • flexibility and problem-solving skills
    • ability to trouble shoot and keep a level head in stressful situations
    • ability to learn, teach, and uphold policies and procedures
    • customer-service orientation
    • ability to create and disseminate clearly written and thorough reports on a timely

      basis

    • desire to maintain a clean and orderly workplace
    • comfort learning and using project management and ticketing software

• comfort communicating via e mail and text • discretion and tact

Desired Competencies

• experience using a Box Office system
• CPR/AED and/or First Aid certification
• public speaking and training background • appreciation of the performing arts

Education/Experience

• Associate’s Degree • Ability to lift 25 lbs.

Salary/Benefits

  • Salary range is $42,000-$48,000 dependent on relevant experience
  • this is a full-time position with hours mostly during evenings and weekends. Hours

    vary from week to week.
