Singin’ in the Rain (1952)
Singin’ in the Rain consistently tops the list of the greatest musical films ever made. It will be screened on The Smith’s 30′ x 40′ movie screen, the largest in the Finger Lakes.
1927 Hollywood. Monumental Pictures’ head, R.F. Simpson, dismisses what he thinks is a flash in the pan: talking pictures. It isn’t until The Jazz Singer (1927) becomes a bona fide hit that R.F. jumps on the talking picture bandwagon, despite no one at the studio knowing anything about the technology. This homage to early filmmaking digs into the grit and glamour of the backstage lives of the actors, technicians, and moguls who muddled through changes in culture and technology with humor and song. Directed and choreographed by Gene Kelly, he also stars, alongside Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds.
